Abstract

Reviews the book, Young Homicide Offenders and Victims: Risk Factors, Prediction, and Prevention From Childhood by Rolf Loeber and David P. Farrington (see record 2011-17549-000). In this book, the authors and their colleagues (seven of whom coauthored chapters in this volume) describe how they used data from a large longitudinal study, the Pittsburgh Youth Study (PYS), to develop statistical models for predicting which young men would become violent offenders, convicted perpetrators of homicide, shooting victims, and victims of homicide. In the course of 10 chapters, the various authors review the previous literature on young male homicide victims and perpetrators, describe the PYS, examine issues such as early risk factors for both victims and perpetrators, and ultimately describe the modeling of preventive interventions.
